Well what do you want to script for? You have to no what you're scripting for before you script.

To write code, whether it's a program or script doesn't matter, you have to know the basics of programming.
Assuming you do, then take a look at the various documentation located by the links in my signature. Lunar is a nice and powerful scripting plugin for FFXI Windower that utilizes the Lua 5.0 scripting engine.

I'm also in this boat, I know absolutely nothing about scripting/programming but I would like to learn about how to use lunar for FFXI. I read some of the begginner threads but it's pretty greek to me. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

reverse engineer some code... thats the best advice i have for ya... that and have some basic functions you can look at from that language you are workin with... java is pretty easy to start with... im new to lunar (and pearl) but done plenty of java/script, c/++, html(xml, xul), and basic but yeah, most everything i learned was from reverese engineering... since lunar plugin isn't working, download eclipse and start with java for ease (or basic but i don't know of a compiler for that since its been so long since ive worked with it... back in the days when you started from dos... ::tear: but yeah... google eclipse... and java....
