Thought i'd start up a system spec thread here for fun and also because i'm interested as to what other ppl are running I've just splashed my student loan on a new system and will be forced to eat 9p cans of value beans for the remainder of the year. I'll get the ball rolling - Cpu - AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) ~ 2010MHz
- Motherboard - DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D (Socket 939) PCI-Express
- RAM - GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5
- GFXCard - BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
- HDD - Western Digital Raptor 74GB WD740GD 10,000RPM SATA 8MB Cache
- Power - Hiper HPU-4B580 Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU - Blue

That is a very nice system. Here is mine:
CPU: Dual opteron 242 (1.6ghz per cpu) RAM: 1gigabyte OCZ ram running in NUMA dual channel mode (4 channels, 2 per CPU) VIDEO: 128 mb XFX gForce 6800 with pipeline hack MOBO: Tyan ThunderK8W server motherboard Storage: 36gb 10k rpm sata boot drive, 160gb 7200 rpm sata storage drive, 1TB raid array mapped to fileserver over gigabit ethernet.
Its not the best system for playing ffxi. The CPU's are too slow and ffxi only uses one >_< But for compiling code while playing ffxi, it is a fucking monster. Writing Lunar without a dual proc system would be impossible. I also get 11.5 GB/s memory bandwidth because of the NUMA support on the mobo, which is also nice.
Also, my motherboard has support for dual core opterons, so I can drop 2 of those in and have a quad core system ^_^ Go go $400 motherboard $_$
I forgot to mention the dual LCD pannels. Also really good for writing code.

Holy shit! You got a generator in the basement to run all that?

Lol, when your landlord pays the power bill, you don't need a generator ^_^

Well, my fucking fileserver died. Time to buy new hardware ^_^ Goodbye promotion bonus from work >_< Anyway, here are the specs: Motherboard: www.tyan.com/products/html/tomcatk8e_spec.htmlCPU: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103537PSU: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103932I had a choice for repairing this machine. Go the cheap route and buy some shitheap athlon xp throwaway motherboard to replace the dead ASUS A7N8x deluxe that I have in the machine now (Best motherboard I have ever owned), or I could spend a little bit more money and buy some high quality server level hardware that would be upgradable for many years to come. Wait, I said that was a choice? Anyway, for the mobo I went with a Tyan Tomcat S2865G2NR. This is the low end cousin of the motherboard I have in my workstation. I went with this board because of its integrated 8mb video card and the dual gigabit NICs, one of which is on the PCI-E bus. Normally the NIC wouldn't be a major issue, but I recently upgraded the apartment LAN to some high end gigabit switches. I also have a 64 bit NIC in my workstation, so getting one for the server was important. One of the problems with running gigabit NIC's on the PCI bus is that PCI simply can't keep up. Its a different story for PCI-X and PCI-E NICs. I am expecting to see at least 100 megabytes a second transfer rates As for the video card, I have been wanting a server motherboard with integrated video for a long time now. This box is going to be running gentoo linux, most likely without KDE or anything like that. An 8mb video card is just fine for a server, and its one less piece of hardware that will be sucking up power and pumping out heat. The ATI rage XL is also fully compatible with linux, so I expect no problems. In case I ever decide to use this board for gaming, it does have a 16x PCI-E port for a video card. I bought the cheapest CPU I could find for this motherboard. This would be an Athlon 64 3000+ socket 939 chip. For a server, thats all I need. I won't be playing games or anything on this box, so I don't need anything more. As long as it can keep a half dozen SSH connections chugging at full speed, its good. Finally, the power supply. On the old setup, I was running a pair of noname 400W psu's. These things sucked alot of dick, and were likely responsible for the death of the old motherboard. There is no way in hell I am putting brand new hardware on a pair of shitty old power supplies. I decided to go with an antec truepower 550w EPS12v PSU. I needed this rather expensive power supply because the new motherboard is technically server hardware, and requires the extra EPS12V connector. For RAM, I will finally be able to put to use the 512MB reg ECC 3-3-3-8 (how's that for wierd timing?) server ram that I have sitting around. I bought this stuff hoping it would fix my current box back when I had a defective motherboard. Its been sitting around in my drawer for 6 months collecting dust. Now I have a use for it! Im thinking about taking the old dead motherboard and hanging it on my wall with a little brass placard under it. That motherboard served me well at many a lan party. Seeing it die was like loosing a dog or something. It got me through all those late night coding sessions back in college without ever breaking a sweat. When I bought it, it was the cream of the crop. In the days of shitty gimmick motherboards with colored PCI slots and neonz, it was a solid workhorse that had the features and the power to get the job done. I tried in vain to find an identical replacement for it, but alas, asus stopped production on it a while back. Hopefully it's replacement will be just as relaible.

Sorry to hear about you mb, my condolences I'm in the process of rehousing 2 of my past machines with some friends that have a couple of pentium 3 machines chugging away. I should slap myself for being so generous, as there not that old, and i could have sold them for a reasonable price but they're unemployed and don't have much spare cash flow(it almost breaks my heart to give away my 2 trusty AMD 3200+'s and 2gb of RAM and two ATI 9800's ,one of them pro ). They've just been lying around for a while so it's better someone is getting some use out of them I've got a Dell inspiron 9300 laptop on order atm. I wouldn't usually go with someone like Dell but it was a "Computers for staff" scheme at work and i'm getting it for a fraction of what it costs currently. Should be good for those long train journey's home and lounging about my sofa Seen one of these the other day and quite liked the look of it for a replacement boot drive. www.tomshardware.com/storage/20050907/I'll perhaps wait for the sata 2 version to arrive(kinda wish i hadn't given that 2gb away now ;D). After attending a lecture given by the police's computer crime unit last week, where they gave demonstrations of how to retrieve information from wiped harddisks, it seems this form of file storage could be a disaster waiting to happen for them. Not that that's the reason i would like one, of course. Boot times for windows and applications are impressive. But the implications of using a hdd such as this to store criminal content could see alot of offenders go free as i'd imagine no footprint is left once the battery has been disconnected and the RAM wiped.
